Glenn Cooper
Intervista a cura di Marika Bovenzi

Welcome to our literary corner Mr. Cooper. For me it is an honor to interview you. You came in 2014 in Italy, to present- through various steps, your latest novel "Dannati". What do you think of Italy? Is there anything in particular that fascinates you?

Italy has become like a second home for me. I get excited every time I visit. The architecture, the stark geographical differences, the food, the culture and most importantly the friendly, welcoming people. Plus there is an important heritage of reading and admiring books. What’s not to love for a writer?

In the Eternal City, Rome, is partly set your novel "The mark of the Devil", what do you think of a place so full of history and tradition? As an Archaeologist, is there any particular element belonging to the Roman culture that caught your attention?

Rome is dripping with history, everywhere you turn your head. For an archaelogist it’s a dream. It feels to me like a living, breathing museum the size of a city.

Always talking of "The mark of the Devil", the novel suggests a struggle between good and evil. According to you, this dichotomy that has always inspired artists, writers, poets and musicians, acts as two distinctly separate entities or as two parts closely related between them-for example, the existence of the good in the bad and vice versa?

Of course, this dichotomy has fueled writers and before them, oral storytellers, probably since the beginning of language. Nothing is as powerful as these opposing forces, so for me it’s a subject I’ve turned to in several books and probably more in the future.

In the same novel is cited "Doctor Faustus" written by Marlowe, but also in "The Resurrection Maker" you speak of another work, "Le Morte d'Arthur" by Thomas Malory. What is your relationship with the ancient English literature? Is there any particular author who loves?

I read “Le Morte d’Arthur” as a teenage boy. For me, along with books like Treasure Island, these adventure stories were my first taste for books which were impossible to put down. I suppose they were the Harry Potter books of my generation. Even though Grail stories are plentiful, I always wanted to do a book with “Le Morte D’Arthur” as a centerpiece and “Il Calice della vita” is that book.

In "The Resurrection Maker" there are important elements, considered mythological by many scholars, such as the existence of King Arthur and Excalibur. What do you think of Celtic mythology? And in general the mythical traditions of ancient cultures?

Hero quests are really the first stories to arise from the great oral tradition of prehistory and they are hard-wired into our DNA. A huge percentage of modern literature and film is a direct extension of the hero story. Star Wars is an obvious example but you can construct very long lists.

In the same novel, as all readers well know, another key issue is the search for the Holy Grail, and mysticism that surrounds this research for centuries. What do you think of this religious phenomenon?

Grail stories are tightly linked to the early history of the Christian tradition and I suppose that is the reason they continue to resonate and proliferate. It’s no wonder that there is a fascination and mysticism to finding the cup that touched the lips of Christ. It represents the ultimate artifact.

Your novels are steeped in history, magic, science fiction, notions of medicine, archeology, mythological and allegorical elements. How do you combine all these factors? When you writing a novel you already know which of these features will be developed, or they are intertwined and act later, during the writing? Come combini tutti questi fattori?

The kinds of stories that I write are fairly complicated, involving lots of plot twists and turns, historical time-shifts, and modern settings. I spend a lot of time doing historical research and a lot of time outlining the book before I start. But it’s impossible (at least for me) to anticipate how a story will develop so I usually have to keep revising the outline as I go. One thing never changes: the ending. I won’t start a book unless I can envision a great ending because that stays with a reader for the longest time.

In "Dannati" you have created an alternative Inferno, a world similar to our own, yet unmatched. We also know that you read the “Multiversum’s trilogy” of your Italian fellow Leonardo Patrignani, what do you think about parallel worlds, and alternative dimensions?

Leonardo Patrignani did a wonderful job with his books. I really love them. We share a fascination with similar subjects but find different ways to write about them. Aside from the fact that modern physics and the long-sought Theory of Everything predict the multiverse, as a writer it’s hard not to be excited about the possibilities.

Your Hell is described as a world devoid of faith, art, culture, beauty, and hope, a place technologically underdeveloped. According to you in the future, our world will be like your parallel universe?

I’m really a terrible futurist which is why I don’t write science fiction. I have no idea what the future will hold or even if there will be a future for mankind!

Federico Barbarossa
In the Inferno of the damned, we find a number of historical figures such as Henry VIII, Frederick Barbarossa, and Maximilien de Robespierre. In reality, there is some historical subject that fascinates you the most?

I’m drawn to European history because it’s the history of the culture in which I live and the culture I understand the best on an emotional level. DANNATI could be based or could extend into an exploration of evil in other continents but thinking about Europe is the most fun for me. There really are so many evil characters in history to choose from. There’s no shortage of colorful figures.

"The library of the dead." it is a duty to mention your debut novel, followed by "The Book of Souls" and "The keepers of the library." The idea that someone at a given time has already written the date of death of each of us, brings to mind the mystery of the Indian palm leaves. Somehow, this legend inspired you?

I became aware of ideas about predestination as a boy and became fascinated by it. Maybe I didn’t have to work hard or study for examinations if everything was predetermined. That’s when my parents told me about free will and made me do school work.

You announced that "The library of the dead" will also become a television series. When you wrote the trilogy was already thinking about a television transposition \ film, or is it a project that has seen only after the publication?

I’m hoping there will be a TV series in the future but I won’t be writing it. I’m too busy writing new novels and I like the solitary nature of novel-writing. TV writing is collaborative and political. It’s not for me.

Can you tell us something about your next novel "La porta delle tenebre-Dannati", due out in Italy in June 2015? Dannati”, in uscita in Italia a giugno 2015?

In the end of Book 1 Emily realized she had to go back to Hell to save her sister and her sister’s children. In Book 2 she and John have new challenges, meet new characters, and the Earth faces new threats.

Before you leave, I'd like to ask you: what does Glenn Cooper do in his free time? What other wonders occupy his time?

At the end of every day of writing I do what I love the most: watch films and great TV.

Globe Theater (Londra)
If you could choose to live in a certain era, on what date would you set your time machine?

That’s easy. Elizabethan England at the time of Shakespeare and Marlowe. I want to stand in the audience at the Globe Theater and see the first productions of Macbeth and King Lear and Doctor Faustus. Wouldn’t that be great? È semplice. L’Inghilterra Elisabettiana all’epoca di Shakespeare e Marlowe.

Thank you very much for your time and for the interview the you granted us. We look forward to your next novel.
