Intervista esclusiva a Alwyn Hamilton, autrice di "Rebel. Il deserto in fiamme"

Hi! Thanks so much for having me! I was born in Toronto, but I grew up in a small town in France and now I live in London. I spent my childhood making up stories and quitting every after school activity I was put into (dance, guitar lessons, horse riding, tennis, etc.) except for art, which I went
on to work with. I am, according to my twitter bio, recklessly excited about anything that I love, and according to my mother, entirely too likely to have so many things on my floor that I can’t see it anymore. And I like to write books about teenagers and magic and weapons. Ciao! Grazie mille per avermi ospitata! Sono nata a Toronto, ma sono cresciuta in una piccola città in Francia e ora vivo a Londra. Ho trascorso la mia infanzia inventando storie e lasciando ogni attività extra scolastica in cui entrassi (danza, lezioni di chitarra, equitazione, tennis, ecc) fatta eccezione per l'arte, con cui ho continuato a lavorare. Where does the idea for “Rebel of the Sands” come from? From what you have been inspired and which is the character that best represents you? Da dove è nata l’idea di “Rebel. Il deserto in fiamme”? Da cosa sei stata ispirata e qual è il personaggio che meglio ti rappresenta?

"Rebel of the Sands" started with my main character, Amani. After hearing a lot of sexist criticism about how girls in fiction shouldn’t be written to use weapons as well as men I decided I wanted to write a young sharpshooting girl who went by the Blue-Eyed Bandit. It naturally, seemed like this idea was a western, except I didn’t want to write a Historical Western set in the United States. If I was going to write this I wanted it to be a fantasy, set in a fictional world. And then out of nowhere, after weeks of turning it over in my head, the idea just hit me to combine it with the mythology of the Arabian Nights. I started thinking of all the elements that connected the two genres: the desert, outlaws and bandits, very religious societies, and so on and so forth. Amani’s adventure began there, combining the magic of the 1001 Nights with the action and adventure of a classic western. "Rebel. Il deserto in fiamme" è iniziato con il mio personaggio principale, Amani. Dopo aver ascoltato un sacco di critiche sessiste su come le ragazze nei romanzi non dovrebbero essere descritte come capaci di usare le armi alla pari degli uomini, ho deciso che volevo scrivere di una giovane ragazza tiratrice provetta, nota come il bandito dagli occhi blu. E naturalmente questa idea appariva come un western, tranne per il fatto che non volevo scrivere di uno storico Western ambientato negli Stati Uniti. Se lo avessi scritto, avrei voluto che fosse un fantasy, ambientato in un mondo immaginario. E poi dal nulla, dopo settimane a rigirarlo nella mia testa, mi ha colpito l’idea di combinarlo con la mitologia delle Mille e una notte. Ho iniziato a pensare a tutti gli elementi che collegavano i due generi: il deserto, fuorilegge e banditi, società molto religiose, e così via. L'avventura di Amani è iniziata lì, combinando la magia delle Mille e una notte con l'azione e l'avventura di un classico western.

I think all the characters have a little bit of me in them, but the character who is probably most superficially like me is Shazad, Amani’s best friend in the rebellion. And I say that purely based on background because Shazad is clearly much more beautiful and athletic and talented than me, or most human beings alive. But she is an older sister to a younger brother like I am, and she’s from the most stable family background of any character in the series, which informs a lot of who she is, in terms of her confidence and her belief in her ability to do things, and that she’s always in the right. And I can see a lot of myself reflected in that. Credo che tutti i personaggi abbiano un po' di me in loro, ma il personaggio che probabilmente è come me – superficialmente- è Shazad, la migliore amica di Amani nella ribellione. E lo dico, puramente basandomi sul contesto, perché Shazad è chiaramente molto più bella e atletica e di talento rispetto a me, o della maggior parte degli esseri umani. Ma lei è una sorella maggiore di un fratello più giovane, come me, e proviene da un ambiente familiare più stabile rispetto a qualsiasi personaggio della serie, il che ci da un sacco di informazioni su chi sia, in termini di fiducia e fede nelle sue capacità di fare le cose, e che lei sia sempre nel giusto. E posso vedere tante cose di me stessa riflesse in ciò.

Amani is a young, strong and determined woman grew up in a forgotten place. I would define her an idealistic and at the same time realistic girl. Can you tell us a bit about Amani? Amani è una giovane, forte e determinate donna, cresciuta in un posto dimenticato. La definirei una ragazza idealistica e allo stesso tempo realistica. Puoi dirci qualcosa di Amani? 

Amani is a sixteen year old sharpshooter with a smart mouth, who tends to act first and think later. She starts the book off restless and reckless and sometimes selfish, desperately trying to escape her hometown of Dustwalk. She has relied on gut instinct and good aim to get by in the tough environment she grew up in her whole life and that has made her who she is at the start of the book, but she gets to grow and develop as the journey of the book goes on and become less self centered. I also like to think she has a sense of humour though. And there’s a lot of hope in her, she really believes there’s something better out there for her, and she’s going to find it or die trying. Amani è una tiratrice scelta, di sedici anni, con una lingua tagliente che tende prima ad agire e poi a pensare. All’inizio del libro tira fuori la sè inquieta, temeraria e a volte egoista cercando disperatamente di sfuggire alla sua città natale di Dustwalk. Lei ha fatto affidamento sull’istinto e una buona mira per tirare avanti in un ambiente difficile in cui è vissuta per tutta la sua vita e che l'ha fatta diventare la persona che troviamo all'inizio del libro, ma cresce e si sviluppa durante tutto l’evolversi del libro e diventa meno egocentrica. Mi piace inoltre pensare che abbia anche senso dell’umorismo. E c’è molta speranza in lei che realmente crede che qualcosa di migliore possa accaderle, e lo troverà o morirà provandoci.

Your book reveals a passion for oriental culture and Islamic mythology. Is there something in particular that you love of this culture? I tuoi libri, rivelano una passione per la cultura orientale e la mitologia islamica. C’è qualcosa in particolare che hai amato di questa cultura?

I grew up in France and I think my earliest fascination for the this part of the work comes from the French interest with Orientalism, in literature and in Art. I specifically studied 19th century painting in university, and romanticized Turkish bath scenes and sketches of streets of Algiers were part of that. I then went on to work in the Islamic Art Department of an Auction House, working on completely different types of art, but within the same culture. Sono cresciuta in Francia e penso che la mia passione per questa parte del lavoro sia nata dall’interesse francese per l’orientalismo, sia in letteratura che nell’arte. Personalmente, ho studiato in particolar modo la pittura del XIX secolo all’università, e romanzate scene dei bagni turchi e schizzi di strada ad Algeri erano parte di tutto ciò. In seguito ho cominciato a lavorare presso il Dipartimento di Arte Islamica della Auction House, lavorando su diversi tipi di arte, appartenenti però alla stessa cultura.

What is your relationship with the Islamic literature? Is there any particular author that you admire? Che rapporto hai con la letteratura islamica? C’è qualche autore in particolare che ammiri?

I loved the 1001 Nights growing up. And I think that a big part of my fascination with the 1001 Nights, comes from the fact that, I became disillusioned with those stories much later in life than with other fairytales. Growing up in Europe we all learn European History, and figure out pretty quickly as children that because there is no queen Cinderella, or Queen Snow White in our History Books, they must just be stories. But the stories of Scheherazade and Aladdin, those belong to a world we know less about and so, for me, they held that magic just a little bit longer. Ho amato le Mille e una notte, crescendo. E penso che parte di questo interesse in questo romanzo, derivi dal fatto che quelle storie mi hanno disillusa nella vita molto più tardi rispetto ad altre fiabe. Crescendo in Europa, tutti impariamo la storia europea, e da bambini si capisce piuttosto rapidamente che non essendoci regine come Cenerentola e Biancaneve nei nostri libri di storia, le fiabe sono solo storie. Ma le storie di Sherazade e Aladino, appartengono ad un mondo che conosciamo di meno e così, per me, hanno mantenuto quella magia un po' più a lungo.

Istanbul

Have you ever visited any oriental city? What do you think of their traditions? Hai mai visitato qualche città orientale. Cosa ne pensi delle loro tradizioni?

I have been lucky enough to go to a few. I have very vivid memories of visiting Morocco when I was a teenager, which included riding camels across the sands dunes and a night of sleeping in the desert. More recently I’ve also gotten to go to Turkey, and Istanbul, architecturally, is a bit inspiration for what the capitol city of Miraji looks like. Sono stata fortunata abbastanza da visitarne alcune. Ho davvero dei ricordi vividi del mio viaggio in Marocco quando ero adolescente, che includono cavalcare cammelli attraverso dune desertiche, e una notte passata nel deserto. Più di recente invece, ho avuto la possibilità di andare in Turchia, e Istanbul, architettonicamente parlando, è stata d’ispirazione per creare la capitale di Miraji.

Your novel has a captivating and engaging style, and the descriptions are very accurate, it is like living alongside to the protagonist. The writing of the novel has required a lot of research? Il tuo romanzo ha uno stile accattivante e coinvolgente, e le descrizioni sono molto accurate, è come vivere al fianco della protagonista. La stesura del romanzo ha richiesto molta ricerca?

I don’t tend to absorb non-fiction very well, so I have reference books to look up specific facts like an item of clothing or food, but I particularly read a lot of folk tales to absorb the world I wanted to create in "Rebel of the Sands". There are some fantastic collections of stories translated by Amina Shah, which I love in particular. In researching the sequel to Rebel of the Sands, I did read a fantastic book about life in Harems which I borrowed details from. Io non tendo ad assorbire molto bene i saggi, così ho dei libri di riferimento in cui guardare specifiche cose come un capo di abbigliamento o cibo, ma in particolar modo ho letto molte storie di folklore per far mio il mondo che volevo creare in ”Rebel. Il deserto in fiamme”. Ci sono alcune fantastiche collezioni di storie tradotte da Amina Shah, che amo particolarmente. Ricercando invece per il sequel di “Rebel. Il deserto in fiamme”, ho letto un fantastico libro sulla vita negli harem, da cui ho preso in prestito alcuni dettagli.

Are you a superstitious person? When you work/write, do you have any specific "ritual"? A special place in where to create, favorite songs to listen to, etc. Sei una persona superstiziosa? Quando lavori/ scrivi, hai qualche “rituale” particolare? Un posto speciale in cui creare, canzone preferita da ascoltare, etc.

I’m quite superstitious in different ways (I believe in wishes on birthday candles and stars and in seven years of bad luck breaking a mirror) but not too much about writing. I do have some rituals but they are mostly practical. I write in the same places because I know which cafes will let me sit there for hours staring at a laptop, or because their internet is very bad and so I don’t get distracted. And I listen to the same song on loop because then it becomes white noise in the background and helps me focus. Though one superstitious tradition I do kind of have is that I almost always get an almond croissant before starting a day of writing. Sono abbastanza superstiziosa in modi diversi (credo nei desideri delle candele di compleanno, nelle stelle, e nei sette anni di sfortuna di uno specchio rotto), ma non molto nella scrittura. Ho qualche rituale, ma sono per lo più pratici. Scrivo negli stessi posti perché conosco quali caffè mi lasciano sedere per ore usando il mio pc, o perché la loro connessione ad internet è così pessima che non mi distraggo. E ascolto la stessa canzone in loop perché diventa un rumore bianco di sottofondo e mi aiuta a concentrarmi. Anche se una sorta di tradizione superstiziosa che ho, è quella di mangiare un cornetto alle mandorle prima di iniziare una giornata di scrittura.

If you had not become a writer, what would you do now? Se non fossi diventata una scrittrice, cosa faresti ora?

I used to work in an Auction House so I would probably still be there, or in a similar job which combines art and business. But if I had moved on from that, I really would have liked to work in TV or advertising or something else that combines the creative with the practical. Di solito lavoro alla Auction House, probabilmente starei ancora li, o in un lavoro simile in cui si combini l’arte e il business. Ma se dovessi spostarmi da questo ambiente, mi piacerebbe lavorare in TV o pubblicità o qualcos'altro che unisca la creatività con la pratica.

Before you leave, I'd like to ask you: can you tell us something of your next novel? One small spoiler… Prima che ti lasci, mi piacerebbe chiederti: ci diresti qualcosa del tuo prossimo romanzo? Un piccolo spoiler…

The sequel to "Rebel of the Sands" is called Traitor to the Throne. There’s a lot of intrigue, and some betrayal, as the title suggests, and while some of it takes place in the desert, but a lot of it takes place in the Sultan’s Palace. And it introduces one of my favorite characters to write about, a foreign thief who can walk through walls. Il sequel di “Rebel. Il deserto in fiamme” è intitolato “Rebel. Il tradimento”. C’è molto intrigo, alcuni tradimenti, come suggerisce il titolo, e qualcuno si svolgerà nel deserto, ma molti altri si svolgeranno nel palazzo del sultano. E introducono uno dei miei personaggi preferiti di cui mi è piaciuto scrivere, un ladro straniero che può camminare attraverso i muri.
