Hello! Thank you so much for hosting me! I'm currently writing this from a hotel in Atlanta--I've been doing so much traveling lately to writing events that it feels appropriate to be talking about a very
different kind of traveling. The idea for these books had been "cooking" for a long time at the back of my mind. I've always really loved history, and I wanted to combine that in some way with my love of fantasy and writing. I went to school at the College of William and Mary (second oldest school in America... which by Italian standards is not actually that old), which is at one end of Colonial Williamsburg. It's basically a "living

reenactment" of the 18th century, just before the American Revolution. You interact with the setting an actors as a modern person and are asked to juxtapose your beliefs against the lives of those who lived in the past. It's a really interesting experience, and I wanted to try to capture that in a book. Originally, Etta was only going to visit 1776 Manhattan but I decided to really push myself to write about other parts of the world and different time periods to be as inclusive as possible. Ciao! alle domande da un hotel di Atlanta - sto compiendo molti viaggi ultimamente per scrivere di eventi al punto che ritengo opportuno parlare di un tipo di viaggio diverso. L’idea per questi libri è stata “cotta” per molto tempo nei retroscena della mia mente. Ho sempre amato la storia, e ho voluto combinarla in qualche modo con il mio amore per il fantasy e la scrittura. Ho frequentato il College di William e Mary (seconda scuola più antica in America ... che secondo gli standard italiani non è in realtà quella vecchia), che è ad una estremità del Colonial Williamsburg. È fondamentalmente un "rievocazione vivente" del XVIII secolo, poco prima della rivoluzione americana. Interagisci con la configurazione di attori come persone moderne e viene richiesto di giustappore le tue credenze contro le vite di coloro che hanno vissuto nel passato. È un’esperienza interessante, e ho cercato di catturare ciò nel libro. Originariamente, Etta doveva visitare solo la Manhattan del 1776, ma ho deciso di spingermi a scrivere di altre parti del mondo e di differenti periodi di tempo per essere il più aperta possibile.

In the two books, the protagonists come to visit many places and epochs. Is there any particular link between you and these places? Did you visit someone? Nei due libri, i protagonisti visitano alcuni luoghi ed epoche. C’è qualche legame particolare tra te e questi posti?

You know, it's actually split between places I've been and places I really want to visit. I lived and worked in Manhattan, but I've been to Paris, London, Vatican City, San Francisco... but I'd really love to visit Carthage, Angkor Thom, and Russia especially. Can I tell you a secret? One of my tricks for writing about the places I've never been to was actually looking up tourist videos on Youtube! There are A TON of tourists that just walk around filming these sites--it makes it much easier to describe what the characters might be seeing! Sai, in realtà tutto è suddiviso tra luoghi in cui sono stata e luoghi in cui vorrei davvero andare. Vivo e lavoro in Manhattan, ma sono stata a Parigi, Londra, Città del Vaticano, San Francisco…, ma mi piacerebbe molto visitare Cartagine, Angkor Thom e la Russia specialmente. Posso dirti un segreto? Uno dei miei trucchi per scrivere di posti in cui non sono mai stata è quella di guardare video turistici su Youtube! Ci sono una tonnellata di turisti che viaggiano solamente per filmare questi siti - rende più facile da descrivere ciò che i personaggi vedranno!

If you were a traveler like Etta, where would you go and when? Se fossi una viaggiatrice come Etta, dove vorresti andare e quando?

In the past I would have said 1776 Manhattan, but I'm going to stick with the future. I love modern amenities like flushing toilets! That said, I really do think the most interesting time periods to visit are likely the ones that would feel the most chaotic. One of the things that interests me most about the 18th century in America is how society was on the cusp of a great change. I think it would be super fascinating to see if average people were aware of it. In passato, avrei detto Manhattan nel 1776, ma mi limiterò al futuro. Amo i comfort moderni come lo sciacquone! Detto questo, penso davvero che i tempi più interessanti da visitare sono probabilmente quelli percepiti come i più caotici. Etta and Nicholas are a great characters . Can you tell us something more about them we do not know? Etta e Nicholas sono grandi personaggi. Puoi dirci qualcosa in più su di loro che non sappiamo?

Thank you! Hmmmm... something you don't know... Oh, how about I tell you what almost came to be! In the original outline for the story, Nicholas was the bastard son of a wealthy plantation owner who was running away to sea to avoid a life he didn't want, and Etta's first (jerk) boyfriend actually had a whole scene with her in which they talked about what happened between them and Etta's drive. Both changed as I started talking to the characters and getting to know them better. Grazie! Uhm… qualcosa che non sapete…oh, vi dico cosa stava quasi per venirne fuori! Nello schema originario della storia, Nicholas era il figlio bastardo di un ricco proprietario di piantagioni che correva per mari per evitare una vita che non desiderava, e il primo (idiota) fidanzato di Etta aveva una scena intera con lei in cui hanno parlato di ciò che è successo tra loro e il comportamento di Etta. Entrambi sono cambiati quando ho iniziato a parlare con i personaggi e li ho conosciuti meglio.

Who's your favorite one? Which is the character that best represents you? Chi è il tuo preferito? Qual è il personaggio che ti rappresenta meglio?

This is such a cop-out, but I really do love them all equally, even Sophia. She might have my favorite character arc in the series. I see complaints about her from readers who say that they're not certain if they're supposed to see her as a good guy or a bad guy, and I think that's actually perfect--she's not as honorable as Nicholas, or as well-intentioned as Etta, but she is her own person entirely, and someone struggling for control of her destiny. In order to do that, she has to learn how to harness that innate drive and anger she has and put it to use in a good, meaningful way. È una tale scappatoia, ma li amo tutti allo stesso modo, anche Sophia. Potrebbe avere il mio arco caratteriale preferito nelle serie. Vedo lamentele su di lei dai lettori che dicono di non essere sicuri se vederla come una brava ragazza o una cattiva ragazza e penso che sia davvero perfetta - non è altrettanto onorevole come Nicholas, o benintenzionata come Etta, ma lei è tutta la sua persona e qualcuno che lotta per il controllo del suo destino. Per farlo, deve imparare a sfruttare quel comportamento innato e la rabbia che ha e metterlo in uso in un modo buono e significativo.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? When she doesn’t writes, who's Alexandra? Puoi dirci qualcosa su di te? Quando non scrive, chi è Alexandra?

For a long time writing was my hobby! I wrote a ton of fan fiction growing up, mostly Star Wars, Sailor Moon, and some Harry Potter. Now that I write for a living, I'm constantly trying to find a new hobby for myself. I like riding my bike along the canal where I live (note: this canal is, sadly, not nearly as scenic as your canals!), photography (though I'm still VERY much a beginner), and playing with my dog who really does demand a ton of my attention. He rules our house! Per un lungo periodo di tempo, scrivere è stato il mio hobby! Ho scritto una tonnellata di fan fiction crescenti, perlopiù Star Wars, Sailor Moon, e qualche Harry Potter. Ora che scrivo per vivere, sono alla costante ricerca di nuovi hobby per me stessa. Mi piace andare in bicicletta lungo il canale dove vivo (nota: questo canale è, purtroppo, nemmeno lontanamente scenico come i vostri canali!), la fotografia (anche se sono principiante ), e giocare con il mio cane che richiede davvero una tonnellata di mia attenzione. Lui comanda la nostra casa!

Instead, as a reader, what genres you love to read? Who are your favorite authors? Invece, come lettrice, quale genere ti piace leggere? Chi sono i tuoi autori preferiti?

I actually read quite a bit, and across so many genres! I lean more toward science fiction and fantasy, but I adore romance and non-fiction. Right now I've been really into suspense/thrillers--though I tend to listen to a lot of true crime podcasts and get my fill of murder that way. Some of my favorite authors include JK Rowling (OF COURSE), Ronald Dahl (a forever favorite), Jane Austen, Madeleine L'Engle, Laini Taylor, Leigh Bardugo, Susan Dennard, Erin Bowman, Victoria Aveyard, and Sabaa Tahir. I have so many author buds that it feels wrong to pick favorites! Ho effettivamente letto un bel po ', e in tanti generi! Sono incline più alla fantascienza e al fantasy, ma adoro il romanticismo e la non-fiction. Adesso sono stata immersa in suspense / thrillers - anche se tendo ad ascoltare un sacco di vera podcast di criminalità e ottenere la mia sazietà di omicidio in questo modo. Alcuni dei miei autori preferiti sono JK Rowling (NATURALMENTE), Ronald Dahl (un sempre preferito), Jane Austen, Madeleine L'Engle, Laini Taylor, Leigh Bardugo, Susan Dennard, Erin Bowman, Victoria Aveyard e Sabaa Tahir. Ho così tanti boccioli d’autore che sembra sbagliato scegliere i favoriti!

Are you a superstitious person? When you work/write, do you have any specific "ritual"? A special place in where to create, favorite songs to listen to, etc... Sei una persona superstiziosa? Quando lavori/ scrivi, hai qualche “rituale” specifico? Un posto speciale dove creare, canzoni preferite da ascoltare, etc...

YES! My mom's family is Greek, and I feel like I've inherited a kind of witchy intuition as well as a lot of family superstitions. I have a lucky ring that I wear when I want, or am expecting, some kind of news. I create a playlist that fits the mood of the story and listen to it and only it while working on a manuscript, and I have a little ritual for making my coffee and walking my dog. If any of those little moments get thrown out of whack, I really do think it messes up my whole day! SI! La famiglia di mia mamma è greca, mi sento come se avessi ereditato una specie di intuizione stregonesca così come un sacco di superstizioni familiari. Ho un anello fortunato che indosso quando voglio, o se aspetto delle belle notizie. Creo una playlist che si adatta all'atmosfera della storia e ascolto solo e soltanto quella mentre lavoro su un manoscritto e ho un piccolo rituale per fare il mio caffè e camminare con il mio cane. Se uno di quei piccoli momenti viene a mancare, credo davvero che mi si scompigli tutta la mia giornata!

What are your future plans? Are you already writing a new book? Quali sono i tuoi piani futuri? Stai già scrivendo il nuovo libro?

I'm currently working on the sequel to a middle grade novel that comes out in the US this September called THE DREADFUL TALE OF PROSPER REDDING--I think it's really funny (if I do say so myself!) in a dark way. It's the story of the youngest son of a very wealthy and powerful family who discovers that his family owes all of their fortune to a deal they made with a demon in the past... who is now back for his revenge. It's my love letter to a lot of the Halloween movies I grew up loving, like Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I also have a few other YA projects in the works but I can't talk about them yet, alas! Attualmente sto lavorando al sequel di un romanzo adolescenziale che uscirà negli Stati Uniti questo settembre chiamato THE DREADFUL TALE OF PROSPER REDDING - Penso che sia davvero divertente (se lo dico io!) in un modo oscuro. È la storia del figlio più giovane di una famiglia molto ricca e potente che scopre che la sua famiglia deve tutta la loro fortuna ad un affare che hanno fatto con un demone in passato... che ora è tornato per la sua vendetta. È la mia lettera d'amore a molti film di Halloween con cui sono cresciuta amandoli, come Hocus Pocus e The Nightmare Before Christmas. Ho anche alcuni altri progetti YA in corso, ma non posso ancora parlare di loro, ahimè!

Before you leave, Is there anything you want to say to Italian readers? Prima di lasciarti, c’è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai tuoi lettori italiani?

I just want to thank you guys SO much for all of your support! I'm honestly so thrilled that my books have been translated into your beautiful language and honored you're giving them a try. Some of my happiest memories are from my visits to Italy, and I can't wait to come back and meet you all in person one day! Voglio solo ringraziarvi moltissimo ragazzi per tutto il supporto! Sono davvero emozionata che i miei libri siano stati tradotti nella vostra bellissima lingua e sono onorata che gli abbiate dato una chance. Alcuni dei miei ricordi più felici sono legati alla mia visita in Italia, e non vedo l’ora di ritornare e di conoscervi tutti di persona un giorno!
