Hi Renée. Welcome to Libri&Cultura. I’m so excited to interview you. I loved so much "The Wrath and the Dawn", published in Italy under the title of " La moglie del califfo", and given that I couldn’t wait for the release of the second book, I read "The Rose and the Dagger" in English. Where does the idea for the books come from? From what you have been inspired? Ciao Renée. Benvenuta su Libri&Cultura. Sono così emozionata di intervistarti. Ho amato tantissimo “The Wrath and the Dawn”, pubblicato in Italia con il titolo “La moglie del califfo”, e siccome non potevo aspettare l’uscita del secondo libro, ho letto “The Rose and the Dagger” in inglese. Da dove viene l’idea dei romanzi? Da cosa sei
stata ispirata?

Hello! Thank you so much for putting together this interview. It’s an honor to speak with some of my Italian readers! The inspiration for these books was twofold. Firstly I am a child of mixed race; my mother is South Korean, and my father’s family is Scottish. It was
important to me to write a book that brought a different world to life. Secondly my husband’s family is Persian. At his parents’ house, there is this beautiful tapestry of 1001 Nights. It was the initial inspiration for THE WRATH AND THE DAWN! Ciao! Grazie mille per aver creato questa intervista. È un onore parlare con qualcuno dei miei lettori italiani! L’ispirazione per questi libri è stata duplice. In primo luogo sono figlia di una progenia mista; mia mamma è sud coreana, e la famiglia di mio padre è scozzese. È stato importante per me scrivere un libro che ha dato vita ad un mondo diverso. In secondo luogo la famiglia di mio marito è persiana. A casa dei suoi genitori, c’è un bellissimo arazzo de "Le mille e una notte". È stata l’ispirazione iniziale per "La moglie del califfo"!

All the female characters in your books are heroines in their own way. Who's your favorite one? Which is the character that best represents you? Tutti i personaggi femminili nei tuoi libri sono delle eroine a loro modo. Qual è la tua preferita? Quale personaggio ti rappresenta meglio?

I love this question. All my characters are special to me, but I’d have to say my favorite female character in my book is Shazi. I didn’t think I was like her at first, but my mother told me that Shazi reminded her very much of me -just as headstrong and argumentative! The thing that I adore about Shazi is how she loves with her whole heart. Amo questa domanda. Tutti i personaggi sono speciali per me, ma devo dire che il mio personaggio preferito nel libro è Shazi. All’inizio non pensavo di assomigliarle, ma mia madre mi ha detto che Shazi le ricorda molto me -altrettanto testarda e polemica! La cosa che adoro di Shazi è il modo in cui ama con tutto il suo cuore.

Khalid and Tariq are two wonderful male characters. Can you tell us something more about them we do not know? Khalid e Tariq sono due personaggi maschili meravigliosi. Puoi dirci qualcosa in più su di loro di cui non siamo a conoscenza?

Thankyou so much. An interesting fact about Tariq is that he sings very well. When I created his character, I imagined him as having a beautiful voice, so naturally that meant he was an amazing singer. For Khalid, an interesting fact is that he’s a morning person. Which I always laughed about internally because Shazi hates waking up in the morning. Grazie mille. Un fatto interessante riguardo Tariq è che sa cantare davvero bene. Quando ho creato il suo personaggio, ho immaginato che avesse una bellissima voce, così naturalmente significava fosse un bravo cantante. Per Khalid, un fatto degno di nota è che è una persona mattiniera. Il che mi fa sempre ridere perché Shazi odia svegliarsi presto di mattina.

Your book reveals a passion for oriental culture and Islamic history. Is there something in particular that you love of this culture? I tuoi libri rivelano una passione per la cultura orientale e la storia islamica. C’è qualcosa in particolare che ami di questa cultura?

As I mentioned earlier, my husband’s family is Persian, and my heritage is mixed race, so I think it’s more that my passion is for culture of all kinds. It was incredibly important to me to share a different perspective. Come ho detto prima, la famiglia di mio marito è persiana, e il mio patrimonio (genetico) è di sangue misto, quindi credo che si tratti più della mia passione per tutti i tipi di culture. È stato incredibilmente importante per me condividere una prospettiva diversa.

Egitto

As an archaeologist I loved so much your descriptions of places and architectures and the reference to A Thousand and One Nights. Have you ever visited any oriental city? What do you think of their traditions? Da archeologa ho amato tantissimo le descrizioni di luoghi e architetture e il riferimento a "Le mille e una notte". Hai mai visitato qualche città orientale? Cosa ne pensi delle loro tradizioni?

I’ve been to Cairo and Alexandria. I also toured all over India. Both Egypt and India were very influential in writing the world of THE WRATH AND THE DAWN and THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER. My mother-in-law taught me how to make the food! The people from these cultures are warm and loving and amazing. It was such a treat to share in their experiences. Sono stata al Cairo e ad Alessandria. Ho inoltre visitato tutta l’India. Entrambi, sia l’Egitto che l’India, sono stati molto influenti nella stesura del mondo de "La moglie del califfo" e "The Rose and the Dagger". Mia suocera mi ha insegnato come cucinare il cibo! Le persone di queste culture sono calorose e amorevoli e meravigliose. È stato un vero e proprio piacere condividere le loro esperienze.

Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī

At the beginning of the novels you mention Jalal al-Din Rumi. What have you read about this poet? Speaking of Oriental literature, is there any other author that you love? All’inizio dei romanzi menzioni Jalal al-Din Rumi. Cosa hai letto di questo poeta? Parlando di letteratura orientale, c’è qualche altro autore che ami?

I am a huge fan of Rumi. Again since this book was influence by my husband’s Persian culture, it felt fitting to begin the book with a quote by a Persian poet. I love many writers from this part of the world -Hafez, Saadi, and Tagore are some of my author favorites. Sono una grande fan di Rumi. Anche in questo caso dal momento che questo libro è stato influenzato dalla cultura persiana di mio marito, sembrava adatto iniziare il libro con una citazione di un poeta persiano. Amo molti scrittori provenienti da questa parte del mondo: Hafez, Saadi, Tagore, sono alcuni dei miei autori preferiti.

During your research on Eastern folklore, did you find out a particular history, or a curious one? Durante le tue ricerche sul folklore orientale, hai trovato qualche storia particolare o curiosa?

I think it’s less that I found anything one thing particularly curious and that I found many things wonderfully fascinating! That’s what’s great about learning from a different perspective. Penso non siano tanto le storie particolarmente curiose che ho trovato, quanto le molteplici cose meravigliosamente affascinanti! Questo è ciò che risulta grandioso dall’imparare dalle diverse prospettive.

Before you leave, I'd like to ask you: can you tell us something of your next novel? Prima di lasciarti, mi piacerebbe chiederti: puoi dirci qualcosa in più sul tuo prossimo romanzo?

Of course! I’m so thrilled about my next novel. It’s called FLAME IN THE MIST, and it’s set in a fantasy feudal Japan. It’s like Mulan meets 47 Ronin. The main character Mariko is an alchemist, and she has a personality that reminds me a lot of Hermione. She infiltrates a clan of ninja and uncovers a world of secrets! Certo! Sono così elettrizzata per il mio prossimo romanzo. È intitolato "Flame in the Mist", ed è ambientato in un fantastico Giappone feudale. È come se Mulan incontrasse i 47 Ronin. La protagonista principale Mariko è un'alchimista e ha una personalità che mi ricorda molto Hermione. Si infiltra in un clan di ninja e scopre un mondo di segreti!
